(Las Vegas, NV) The famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign could soon be solar-powered, although Clark County leaders want to make sure any eco-friendly moves are also easy on the eyes.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports two Nevada nonprofits focused on renewable energy want to rewire the sign with a private grant from the Virginia-based Consumer Electronics Association.
Their plan calls for three fake trees, each with 12 solar panels, that are painted blue to match the welcome sign’s posts.
But Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak says tourists don’t want the contraptions in the photos they take at the landmark, and said he can’t support having the fake trees in the sight line.
County staff members plan to work with the group to propose a better spot for the trees.
