(Las Vegas, NV) Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said Monday the two police officers who shot and killed Daniel Hathorne “were reasonable and legally justified”.
Metro officers Russell Ellsworth and Brandon Oris shot and killed Hathorne in November of 2012. A review showed that they arrested him for threatening his girlfriend with the same knife he had minutes before he died.
The manager of the apartment complex where Hathorne lived called police after he had threatened her.
When police arrived, Hathorne had taken the 65-year-old woman hostage and was holding a knife to her throat.
Ellsworth fired two rounds and Oris fired five at Hathorne, who was struck in the right side of his body.
The only person in the review that was questioned was Homicide Det. Chris Bunting, who investigated the shooting. He says two butcher knives were found at the scene. A toxicology report revealed Hathorne had significant amounts of methamphetamine and other drugs in his system when he died.
