(Las Vegas, NV) The Senate has agreed to give Nevada a place on a border security panel that will form if federal authorities can’t come up with a way to stop 90 percent of illegal border crossings.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted sponsor Sen. Dean Heller as saying he hopes the Southern Border Security Commission is never needed.

But he says Nevada would be one of the states most affected if the Department of Homeland Security fails to come up with an effective plan.

Senators passed the measure 89-9 on Wednesday.

The commission would include presidential and congressional appointees, as well as the governors of border states California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

Nevada is not a border state, but has a large immigrant population and is close to the border.
