Man Charged In Shaken Baby Death
(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–A man has been charged with murder in the death of a 16-month old child.
Detrail Young, 24, who lives with a girlfriend on Owens Avenue, is accused of shaking and injuring the baby girl, identified as Quie’sear. The child was on life support at UMC, where doctors told police they suspected child abuse.
The baby was the daughter of a Los Angeles woman who could not take care of the child. Her sister, who lives with Young in Las Vegas, became a guardian of the child.
Police say Young was the only person with the child at the time he was unresponsive and while he first denied any abuse, later told detectives that he had shaken Quie’sdear while caring for her. He re-enacted the incident for police, using a baby doll, and admitted shaking the child and at one point, dropping the baby on a bed.
A member of the household later told police Young had been seen shaking the child on at least two prior occasions.
Police say Quie’sear had been hospitalized once before for swelling that was suspected as child abuse, but was considered a possible reaction to a food allergy.
