(Reno, NV) Hundreds of people gathered at a funeral in Reno to pay tribute to Barbara Vucanovich, the first woman sent to Congress from Nevada.
The conservative Republican died Monday in Reno at the age of 91.
Gov. Brian Sandoval, U.S. Sen. Dean Heller, former Sen. John Ensign and former Gov. Bob List were among the dignitaries at Friday’s service.
Vucanovich was elected in 1982 to a newly created second House seat that covered all of the state except Las Vegas. She retired in 1996 at the age 75 after seven terms.
Former Clark County GOP Executive Director Tom Lorentzen says Vucanovich became a “pioneer and model for what a woman can do.”
While she had no college degree, she rose to one of the top five leadership positions in the House.
