LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities are calling for increased safety around swimming pools after a Las Vegas teen who was found unconscious in an apartment swimming pool died over the weekend and another teen was hospitalized in critical condition in a separate case.

The Clark County coroner says 13-year-old Mikael Jose Luis Medrano died Saturday of complications at a hospital where he was taken after being found after 11 p.m. Thursday in a swimming pool on South Nellis Boulevard.

The death was ruled an accident.

It was the first this year in Las Vegas police jurisdiction.

Police say a 16-year-old remains hospitalized in critical condition after he was found a little after 11 a.m. Saturday in a backyard pool at a home on Wendy Lane in northeast Las Vegas.
