RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Reno man has been sentenced to four months in jail on an animal cruelty charge in the death of a puppy that police say he threw off the balcony of a third story apartment.
Washoe County sheriff’s records show 57-year-old John Wayne Ponsock began serving his sentence on April 27 for animal cruelty and resisting arrest.
The 4-month-old puppy was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital but had to be put down because of extensive injuries. The case outraged local animal protection activists.
Gina Greisen of Nevada Voters for Animals says she would have liked to see the case prosecuted as a felony resulting in a much harsher penalty. But she told The Associated Press, “We’re glad to see this puppy killer will be spending some time in jail.”
