Las Vegas CBS KXNT- A fourth grade class observed Arbor Day by planting three trees on the grounds of the William Pearson Community Center today. Students from the One Hundred Academy of Excellence said the tree-planting coincides with some earth-day related subjects they’ve been studying in school.

Four Clark County commissioners were on hand to cheerlead as the kids grabbed red-handled shovels and covered the roots of the trees. Commissioner Lawrence weekly told KXNT it’s as much about the kids as the trees.

“We think it’s important to get the kids back outside,” he said. “So many kids are stuck inside on video games, and watching movies, and they don’t get outside and play, and enjoy the environment like we did as children.”

The students shoveled dirt to cover the roots of three small trees. Commissioner Steve Sisolak urged them to return in ten years to check on how tall the trees have grown by then.
