Stopping Domestic Violence from Turning to Murder

Las Vegas CBS KXNT- Nevada leads the nation in the number of murders per capita related to domestic violence incidents, according to a national study from 2011. The state has responded by convening a team to scrutinize the way each case was handled.

Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced the recommendations on Thursday from Nevada’s first annual Domestic Violence Fatality Review, which was performed by nonprofits and law enforcment agencies from all 17 counties.

The committee looked into the lives of the victims, Masto said in a conference call. “To see how and when they came into the system for the first time, all the way to their unfortunate death, and then see how we could improve the system.”

Some recommended improvements are better training for 911 operators, allowing instant restraining orders to be issued at the time of arrest, and improving interagency cooperation.
