Vegas-Area Officials Fighting For Terrorism Funds

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas-area elected officials are calling for federal funding administrators to reconsider the ranking the Clark County area is set to receive in a Homeland Security funding formula.

Clark County officials say dropping Las Vegas from 30 to 33 in an urban area risk assessment could mean the loss of $1.8 million in Homeland Security funding, and force the closure of a regional counter-terrorism center.

Clark County Commission Chairman Steve Sisolak, Sheriff Doug Gillespie and the mayors of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas sent an April 10 letter asking DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to boost of the regional ranking.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that federal funding for the counter-terrorism center has dropped from a high of $9 million in 2008 to $1.8 million last year.
