LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court has rebuked a Clark County district judge for ordering a suspect jailed for having a bad attitude.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports video footage of the 70-second hearing raises questions about the exchange between Judge Doug Smith and Juan Perez.

The two spoke only 55 words before Smith sent Perez to jail for 15 days then ordered his bail raised from $3,000 to $1 million on a drug charge.

The judge was upset with Perez’ response when he asked why he hadn’t continued contact with his attorney.

Perez said his lawyer wasn’t helping him, but the judge said he withdrew. Perez responded he’d have to get another.

The judge said they’d find him one, then said, “An attitude like that, you can sit in jail.”
