Las Vegas CBS KXNT- Students from all over Nevada gathered at the Tarkanian Middle School in Las Vegas on Friday to test their knowledge of geography, by competing in the National Geographic Bee.

There were 76 geography buffs on the contest roster, all in the fourth through eighth grades, and they answered round after round of questions like, “Which is the more populous country, Venezuela or Pakistan?” The questions got progressively more difficult in a 45-minute qualifying round.

The state winner gets a hundred dollars and a trip to washington D.C to face off with kids from every state, in a contest moderated by famed game show host Alex Trebek. The national champion will win a $25,000 scholarship.

Geography teacher Paula Tibesar is the state contest coordinator, and a cheerleader for her subject. “In my mind, it’s one of the most important subjects other than math and English,” she told KXNT. “Everything going on in the world relates to geography.”
