PHOENIX (AP) — Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he’s afraid he could lose his post if his critics succeed in forcing a recall election against him.

The sheriff said in a fundraising email Sunday that he’s afraid he could lose if he doesn’t fight back.

Recall organizers say they’re facing fundraising difficulties and relying more on volunteers rather than paid professionals to gather petition signatures.

They say they’ve gathered nearly 150,000 of the 335,000 signatures required by May 30 to prompt the election.

Arpaio campaign manager Chad Willems says he believes recall organizers are seeking new funding sources.

Recall organizers say Arpaio should be recalled, in part, because his office failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crimes cases.

Arpaio supporters say the sheriff won his sixth term fair and square.
