“Sovereign” Figure Gets 8 Years
(LAS VEGAS, KXNT)–A member of the anti-government “Sovereign Movement” was sentenced to an 8 year prison term in a Las Vegas federal courtroom.
Shawn Rice of Seligman, Arizona was convicted last summer of money laundering, conspiracy and numerous counts of failing to appear in court.
The Sovereign movement does not recognize the legitimacy of government or courts and fights them through what prosecutors call ‘paper terrorism.’ In this case Rice and a co–defendant had been accused of laundering more than a million dollars in what they believed were stolen and forged bank checks. They were originally charged in the case four years ago and repeatedly failed to appear in court.
Rice was originally apprehended after a standoff with authorities in Arizona in December 2011.
