Nevada Legislators Seek Mining Tax Reform

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Republican leadership in the Nevada Senate wants to reform the state’s mining tax laws as an alternative to the teachers’ tax initiative that will appear on the 2014 ballot.

The announcement Tuesday comes as Assembly and Senate taxation committees are to hold a joint hearing on the Education Initiative backed by the state teachers’ union and other labor groups. Supporters claim it would raise $800 million a year for K-12 education. It will be on the 2014 ballot.

As an alternative, GOP Senate Minority Leader Michael Roberson says he’ll seek support of SJR15 to remove constitutional protections for the industry. At the same time he says he’ll work on a mining tax measure to extract more money from the industry to help fund education.
