Las Vegas CBS KXNT- Clark County loves tourists, but it doesn’t allow homeowners to rent their vacant properties to vacationers. That could change, if short-term rental advocates have their way.
A group of property managers and would-be vacation rental landlords lobbied the county zoning commission on Wednesday to regulate the lodging option they say is a favorite for families with kids — private homes.
Property managers told the commission they’ve rented to couples who were here to adopt, and youth sports leagues that save money and keep track of the kids by putting them into a house, rather than a hotel.
But commissioners have reservations about less benign renters. Commissioner Steve Sisolak said he’s had complaints from residents enraged by weekend bachelor parties in their neighborhoods. Chris Giunchigliani went on the record against short-term rentals, because, she said, they further destabilize neighborhoods already troubled by foreclosures and multiple families occupying single-family dwellings.
Commissioners made no promises, but said they are willing to hear more information about the short-term rental market, and discuss what should be required for permitting. Henderson and the City of Las Vegas both have short-term rental permit regulations that can be used as a guide.
