Voter ID Project To Cost Less Than Estimated

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) _ Secretary of State Ross Miller says his proposal to update Nevada’s election poll books with voter photographs would cost far less than previously estimated.

Miller says a fiscal note prepared by his office puts the estimated cost at around $800,000. That’s way below original estimates of up to $10 million.

The Democratic secretary of state is sponsoring SB63. Miller says the goal is to update Nevada’s antiquated system that relies on poll books with signatures that poll workers verify before people can vote.

Miller’s plan is to establish an electronic poll book that would use photos from the Department of Motor Vehicles database of driver licenses and state ID cards.

His bill is one of several voter identification measures likely to come up during the 2013 legislative session.
