Oil Firm Plans Fracking In Nevada
(Las Vegas, NV) — A Texas-based company hopes to drill for oil and natural gas on 40,000 acres in Nevada.
The “Review-Journal” reports Noble Energy wants to use hydraulic fracturing on private and public land in rural Elko County, about 400 miles north of Las Vegas.
The process, known as “fracking,” uses pressurized fluid to get into untapped shale deposits. Supporters claim it’s safe, but opponents contend it will hurt the environment.
The company has not yet applied for permits.
Alan Coyner with the state Division of Minerals believes Noble Energy could pave the way for a “fracking” rush in Nevada.
