Las Vegas CBS KXNT- Should teachers have to pass a bar exam, like lawyers? The president of the American Federation of Teachers thinks they should.
AFT president Randi Weingarten, who has been a teacher and an attorney, is advocating a bar exam as a way to enhance confidence for entry-level teachers, and demonstrate mastery in their core subject areas.
The Nevada State Education Association has not vetted Weingarten’s bar exam concept, a spokesman told KXNT this week, and can’t take a position on it. There are unanswered questions about whether a national bar exam would supplant current Nevada requirements, said Nick Di Archangel of the NSEA.
Nevada’s teachers are required to pass tests in three major areas that largely coincide with Weingarten’s proposed bar exam, said Di Archangel. But if a bar exam would mean streamlining the process into a single test, the teachers might be happy to at least look into it, he said.
