Las Vegas CBS KXNT- Parents of Walter Long Elementary students are getting the chance of a lifetime. That’s how school principal Dr. Joyce Brooks described it.
Unemployed and non-English speaking parents are able to take a wide range of classes for free at the school. The service is a partnership between the Caesars Foundation, Vegas PBS and Teach for America. The original idea was to get parents to the point where they could read in English and help kids with homework, but the program has evolved. While English classes are popular, the parents are also offered GED courses and a choice of vocational training programs.
Vegas PBS developed the cirriculum, said Caesars Foundation Director Thom Reilly told KXNT on Tuesday. The foundation donates money and provides employee volunteers.
The PBS certificate programs include practical classes like medical billing and English for the hospitality industry.
Caesars Foundation may expand the program to parents from other schools in the future.
