LAS VEGAS (AP) — A knife-wielding man who was shot and killed by police Friday after grabbing a woman on a Las Vegas sidewalk was distraught about being evicted from a nearby apartment, police said.
The man held two knives to the terrified woman’s throat before two officers fatally wounded him at about 7:30 a.m. several blocks east of the Las Vegas Strip, Officer Jose Hernandez said.
The man was pronounced dead at nearby Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center. He wasn’t immediately identified.
The woman wasn’t physically injured. Police said she was elderly but they didn’t release her name. Hernandez said she was very shaken by the incident.
The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on paid leave pending a departmental review of the shooting. Department policy calls for their names to be made public after 48 hours.
Police said a manager at an apartment complex told patrol officers who were nearby on an unrelated call that the man was being evicted when he threatened to take someone hostage.
The man fled to Cambridge Street near Twain Avenue when police arrived, before taking the woman hostage.
Officer Bill Cassell said the man ignored several commands to drop the knives and release the woman before he was shot.
