LAS VEGAS (CBS Las Vegas) — A car chase with local authorities ended with a surprise when police discovered the driver of the errant car dead at the wheel.
He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Homicide Lt. Ray Steiber told the paper that a maroon Nissan Maxima – that appeared to be driving itself – was seen running a red light on Sunday afternoon. Officers followed the seemingly unmanned car as it sped south before jumping the median and crossing several northbound lanes.
The car then drove off into an open area near a church, before veering back onto the road and hitting another vehicle.
When cops approached the Maxima, they found a dead man inside who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s. He had allegedly been shot multiple times, and was slumped over in the driver’s seat of the car.
The driver’s side of the vehicle also had several bullet holes, police noted.
The ordeal lasted less than a minute, the Review-Journal reported, and was caused by the man’s foot being stuck on the gas pedal.
The deceased driver has not yet been identified.
“We want to know what happened,” Steiber told the Review-Journal. “We don’t know how long he had been unconscious. We don’t know how long prior to this coming to an end had he been shot.”
Police had reportedly received multiple 911 calls about shots fired just before the car chase began.
