Judge Rules Against Nevada Tax Initiative

Carson City, NV — A state judge has ruled against a business tax initiative being pushed by labor and teacher groups, saying it deals with two unrelated topics.

District Judge James Wilson’s ruling made public Monday says the proposal violates the single-subject requirement by seeking to impose a tax supporting education and also mandating that certain taxpayer information be made public.

The measure backed by the Nevada State Education Association and Nevada AFL-CIO sought to impose a 2 percent margins tax on businesses that gross more than $1 million annually. Supporters say it would generate about $800 million annually and increase funding for K-12 education.

But a business group called the Committee to Protect Nevada Jobs argued the measure was misleading.

Nevada State Education Association representatives did not immediately return a request for comment.
