(LAS VEGAS CBS KXNT) “Fanfare” is not quite an adequate word. There was a jazz band and champagne. The showgirls were showing. Local dignitaries had to compete for attention with a bevy of celebrity impersonators — Elvis, Cher, Marilyn, and the Rat Pack were immediately apparent — who lined up to greet passengers from the first Virgin Atlantic flight to arrive on Wednesday afternoon at McCarran’s new Terminal 3.
Airport officials wanted the visitors to know immediately that they are in Vegas, airport spokesman Chris Jones told KXNT.
They couldn’t have been anywhere else, although some of the spectacle may have been lost on international passengers who’d been in the air for 13 hours. Most rolled straight past the champagne offered on silver trays by ersatz flight attendants in satin Mad Men-era uniforms.
Once the passengers were welcomed, Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager welcomed the international carrier who brought them here. Virgin Atlantic was selected to be the inaugural flight into the new McCarran terminal, Brager said, because it was the first international airline to bet on Las Vegas.
Governor Brian Sandoval arrived to greet the second flight, a Copa Airlines flight from Brazil.
