OGDEN, Utah (AP/CBS Las Vegas) — Officials have identified a father who drowned in Pineview Reservoir while trying to rescue his son.
Weber County Sheriff’s Lt. Mark Lowther says divers recovered the body of 42-year-old Jose Bahena shortly after his family reported he’d gone under the water about 8:15 p.m. Monday.
Officials say an 11-year-old boy was struggling in the middle inlet swim area on the east side of the reservoir when his father tried to help. Authorities say the boy was eventually rescued by his 12-year-old brother, who had a life jacket.
The father didn’t resurface and was found about five feet deep according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Lowther said the father was from the Ogden area.
According to the Standard Examiner, Lowther could not release the names of the boys because they are minors. He said there were other family members on the shore while the tragedy occurred, and most spoke only Spanish, making the investigation more difficult.
