Firefighters Battle Fire, Wind on Mt. Charleston
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Firefighters are hoping to quell a wildfire in steep terrain on Mount Charleston before gusty winds sweep through the Las Vegas area.
U.S. Forest Service fire spokesman Ray Johnson said Monday that a helicopter and about 40 firefighters on foot are working to control the Harris Fire above the Fletcher View campground off Kyle Canyon Road.
No one has been hurt and no structures are threatened.
The fire was discovered late Sunday in pinion pine and mountain mahogany at an elevation of about 8,000 feet.
Johnson says the fire is less than ½-acre in size and is burning south — away from the Rainbow subdivision.
Johnson says an investigator has been called in to find a cause.
Mount Charleston is about 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
