SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) — A 21-year-old Orem man has died after falling from a Spanish Fork Canyon spillway tunnel he was exploring with a young woman.

Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon says deputies got a 911 call from the woman about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say Ammon Mark Latham was alive when they found him, but died shortly after being airlifted to University Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The tunnel is a long pipe installed to handle floodwaters after a massive, 1983 mudslide that destroyed the town of Thistle.

It drops straight off about 80 or 100 feet.

Latham’s grandfather, J.R. Latham, tells The Salt Lake Tribune the young man had recently returned from an LDS Church mission to Brazil and wanted to go to medical school after graduating from Brigham Young University.
