CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Assembly Republican caucus leader Pat Hickey wants to tighten Nevada’s campaign contribution reporting laws and shorten election cycles.
At a news conference Monday in Carson City, Hickey said candidates and lawmakers spend too much time raising money.
He called on Democrats and other Republicans to make campaign contribution and disclosure reforms a top priority in the 2013 legislative session.
Among other things, Hickey says lawmakers should be required to report gifts from lobbyists and donors while the Legislature is not in session, and said caps on contributions should be discussed.
He also proposed a cooling off period before former lawmakers can return to the Legislature as lobbyists.
Hickey also says Nevada’s primary should be held closer to the general election, rather than in June.
