(Las Vegas, NV) – January 30, 1995 is a day that many people in North Las Vegas will never forget.
That was the last day in the life of a very promising young police officer. Raul Elizondo had been on the NLV police force for just three years when his life ended after he was shot and killed. The bullet that killed Raul tore between the seams of his bulletproof vest, leaving him with a fatal wound on the left side of his torso. He was just 27.
Tuesday, law enforcement will pay tribute to Raul at an elementary school that bears his name. Today marks the 13th Annual Raul Elizondo Day at Elizondo Elementary School. The school was dedicated in 1998. Officers will read to students and have a parade to go along with a ceremony.
Officer Elizondo was a member of the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association and received the highest award possible from his fellow officers when he was honored as the “1994 Police Officer of the Year.”
