(Las Vegas, NV) — A northwest valley school bus route is being changed after Friday’s accident that left an 11-year-old girl dead.
School district officials say the bus will no longer drive into the neighborhood of Ann Road and Pebble Rock Drive to make a U-turn. Some residents have blamed the route for the death of Kaylee Derks, who died after being struck by the bus.
The driver and three kids inside the bus were not hurt. Kaylee was a fifth-grader at nearby Dean Allen Elementary. The accident remains under investigation.
The driver of the school bus involved in Friday’s deadly accident is said to be “distraught” and on sick leave.
Clark County School District spokeswoman Amanda Fulkerson calls the death of 11-year-old Kaylee Derks “tragic,” and says the driver of the bus, 46-year-old Leslie Rice, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Rice has worked for the district since 2006, and has been a full-time “floater” who filled in for other drivers. Dean Allen Elementary principal Gary Prince sent an e-mail to parents yesterday, calling Kaylee “a ray of sunshine.”
