LAS VEGAS (AP) — U.S. Department of Justice officials are meeting with the Clark County sheriff to determine whether the federal agency will help investigate shootings by Las Vegas police officers.
Sheriff Doug Gillespie will meet with federal officials today. The DOJ contacted Gillespie on Friday after two civil rights groups filed requests earlier this month asking the Justice Department to investigate Las Vegas police. The meeting comes as the department seeks to overhaul several policies and procedures, including how it probes police shootings and how officers use assault rifles.
Las Vegas police have been under increased scrutiny since a Review-Journal investigative series in the fall and several high-profile officer-involved shootings, including one that killed an unarmed Gulf War veteran.
