In NV, Idol Finalist Highlights Digestive Disease

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An American Idol finalist performing at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon is putting the spotlight on the digestive system diseases that nearly sidelined his singing bid.

During a pre-race concert Sunday, Season 10 Idol finalist Casey Abrams is announcing winners of a national contest honoring people living with inflammatory bowel disease.

The 20-year-old Abrams suffers from ulcerative colitis and says a flare-up of the disease was a major obstacle during the singing competition. He ultimately placed 6th.

He’ll announce winners of the IBD Icons contest, which honors people pursuing their dreams in spite of their condition.

Ulcerative colitis and the closely related Crohn’s disease affect 1.4 million Americans.

Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood loss, weight loss, and fatigue. There’s no known cure for the diseases.
