SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The LDS Church is voicing its opposition to a proposed water pipeline that would serve Las Vegas residents by tapping aquifers in eastern Nevada near the border with Utah.

The Deseret News reports officials with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are concerned about the impact on ranchers and others living in the mountain valleys fed by the aquifers.

The LDS Church owns a ranch in White Pine County, one of the sources for the pipeline’s water.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority has applied for water rights in several basins in Nevada as part of a plan to build a 285-mile long pipeline.

SNWA attorney Paul Taggart says the project is environmentally sound and needed to meet the growing demand for water in the Las Vegas area.
