Nellis Official: Aviation Nation Spectators Safe
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Nellis Air Force Base official says spectators face less risk at choreographed air show demonstrations like the upcoming Aviation Nation in southernNevada than at unscripted races like the National Championship Air Races in Reno.
Veteran Nellis spokesman Charles Ramey tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal that comparing the two is like comparing speed skating and figure skating.
Ramey acknowledges that the Reno air races and Aviation Nation are Nevada’s two largest aerial events.
The risk comparison comes after 11 people died, including the pilot, when a racing aircraft crashed into box seats Sept. 16 at the Reno air races. More than 80 people were hurt.
Aviation Nation is scheduled Nov. 12-13 at Nellis Air Force Base outside Las Vegas.
More than 140,000 spectators attended last year.
