Las Vegas – Two defensive players have been voted UNLV’s permanent team captains for the 2011 season, head coach Bobby Hauck announced Friday.
After a vote by players, senior linebacker and Las Vegas native Nate Carter (Las Vegas HS) and senior cornerback Quinton Pointer (Fort Myers, FL/Mariner HS) were named to lead the Scarlet & Gray this fall.
“Our team voted Wednesday night and elected two quality captains,” Hauck said. “Nate and Quinton are two great young men who show excellent leadership qualities and will also be big parts of our defense this season.”
Carter (6-1, 235 pounds) was earlier this year chosen to be the second player to wear “Battle Born Jersey No. 36.” That honor goes to a Nevadan who best exemplifies the Battle Born spirit of his state, which was the 36th state to join the union, and the toughness and pride of Rebel Football. He is a two-time winner of the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year Award and comes into this season with 126 total tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles.
Pointer (5-10, 190 pounds) is one of the team’s fastest players but missed all but one play last season because of injury. Chosen to represent the UNLV defense at the annual Mountain West media gathering earlier this summer, Pointer was named 2011 preseason All-MW second team by Lindy’s magazine. The NFL prospect is the squad’s leading returning career tackler with 167 to go with four picks and two forced fumbles.
UNLV opens its 2011 season on Thursday with a trip to Wisconsin. That game will begin at 5 p.m. PT and be shown live on ESPN HD, ESPN 3D and ESPN 3.
