Las Vegas – With less than two weeks left until the UNLV football team kicks off the 2011 season, head coach Bobby Hauck announced Sunday evening that sophomore quarterback Caleb Herring would start under center against 10th-ranked Wisconsin.
“Caleb just played better,” Hauck said from the Rebels’ off-campus training site, where the team will remain until Thursday. “He has a better grasp of what is going on and a great handle on the offense. He has done a nice job in camp so far.”
Herring (6-3, 190 pounds out of Citrus Hill High School in Moreno Valley, Calif.) redshirted in 2009 before playing in eight games off the bench last fall, completing exactly half of his 56 attempts for 365 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. He picked up valuable experience behind longtime starter Omar Clayton as all of Herring’s scoring passes
