LAS VEGAS (CBS/AP) — The family of an inmate who was killed in a Las Vegas jail is suing after his teenage cellmate allegedly stabbed him with a pencil and said the devil made him do it.
The Las Vegas Sun reports (http://bit.ly/ngQGtw ) Susanne Zeigler filed a lawsuit Thursday in federal court after her brother, Francesco Sanfilippo, was killed July 29.
The suit says authorities improperly housed 18-year-old Carl Guilford, who was in jail on suspicion of killing a 6-year-old. Guilford reportedly told police that “devils” commanded him to kill the 6-year-old. Questions about his mental stability may be answered soon, as a judge ordered him to a mental hospital last week.
The suit seeks $10 million from Las Vegas police and at least $10,000 from Guilford. Police aren’t commenting on the lawsuit.
Police have said Guilford and Sanfilippo were in a special jail unit for suspects who could face threats from the general inmate population.
