Portions Of I-15 Reopen; Delays Continue
LAS VEGAS (CBS) – Portions of southbound Interstate 15 have reopened, but more repairs could take several days away after a fuel tanker truck’s rollover and explosion this morning near Lake Mead Boulevard.
KXNT has learned that I-15 from the northern Las Vegas Beltway to Cheyenne Road is open, but the southbound lanes from Cheyenne Road to D Street will remain closed until further notice.
The truck crashed shortly before 4 a.m. on southbound I-15 between the Lake Mead off-ramp and the Owens overpass, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Jeremie Elliott.
The fuel tanker truck overturned and burst into flames, but the driver escaped unharmed. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The truck was carrying 9,100 gallons of unleaded fuel and became fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived.
The Nevada Department of Transportation is hauling away what is left of the truck while a hazardous materials contractor is cleaning up the fuel.
