Couple Weighs Plea Deal Surgery Death
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A husband and wife who performed an illegal buttocks enhancement surgery that resulted in a Las Vegas woman’s death are considering a plea deal that would reduce the charges against them from murder to manslaughter.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers say Ruben Matallana-Galvas and Carmen Torres-Sanchez are expected to plead guilty to manslaughter Thursday in the death of 42-year-old Elena Caro.
The Colombian couple faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder and practicing medicine without a license. They pleaded not guilty in May and are scheduled to stand trial in February.
Caro’s death was ruled an accident. An autopsy shows she had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia commonly used in cosmetic surgery procedures.
But Matallana-Galvas and Torres-Sanchez still face charges because the death occurred during an illegal operation.
