LAS VEGAS (AP) — A husband and wife who performed an illegal buttocks enhancement surgery that resulted in a Las Vegas woman’s death have pleaded guilty to reduced charges after accepting a plea deal.
Ruben Matallana-Galvas (MAH’-tie-YAHN’-uh GAHL-vis) and Carmen Torres-Sanchez entered the pleas Thursday to manslaughter, conspiracy and practicing medicine without a license in the death of 42-year-old Elena Caro.
The Colombian couple had been scheduled to stand trial in February.
Caro’s family opposes the plea deal, saying only a trial would deliver justice.
An autopsy showed Caro died from an allergic reaction to the anesthesia commonly used in cosmetic surgery procedures.
Matallana-Galvas’s lawyer, Scott Coffee, says he will ask during the October sentencing hearing that his client be released and put on probation because the death was an accident.
