LAS VEGAS (AP) — An ex-Las Vegas police officer has been acquitted of felony reckless driving in an on-duty crash that left the man he was chasing dead and another motorist injured in May 2010.
A Clark County District Court jury spent less than an hour deliberating before finding 30-year-old Aron Carpenter not guilty late Tuesday after a trial that took several days.
Prosecutors alleged Carpenter disobeyed a supervisor’s orders to end the chase and deliberately crashed his patrol cruiser into a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Ivan Carrillo (kah-REE’-o).
Carrillo was suspected of driving under the influence. He died in the crash.
Carpenter was later dismissed from the police force.
Carpenter testified that he was following Carrillo with his emergency lights and siren off when Carrillo drove into the path of the police car.
