Report: Nevada’s Kids Are Too Fat

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A University of Nevada, Las Vegas report says one in three kindergartners in the state are overweight or obese.

The findings released Wednesday by the Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy shows the childhood obesity rate remained about 34 percent since 2009.

That’s despite a national campaign to get children to eat healthier and become more active.

More than 15 percent of the children surveyed were underweight.

The annual survey of Nevada school districts found 17 percent of kindergartners didn’t have health insurance coverage and 29 percent did not visit a dentist last year.

More than half of the uninsured children lived in households with an annual income of less than $25,000.

Nearly 55 percent were Hispanic.

Officials say about 10,500 families participated in the survey.
