The North Las Vegas City Council has adopted a new budget that includes the elimination of hundreds of jobs. The spending plan approved during a special meeting Tuesday night cuts nearly 260 workers, including 55 firefighters and police officers. During the meeting, lawmakers warned without concessions from unions, layoffs would be inevitable. But several union leaders said they’ve given as much as they could. Only Mayor Shari Buck voted against the budget, claiming the cuts would represent a sacrifice in public safety for the city. The budget cuts were necessary to close a nearly $31 million shortfall for the new fiscal year that begins July 1st.
