CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Students shook up the political process with an impromptu meeting with Republican lawmakers outside of the office of Senate Minority Leader Mike McGinness of Fallon.
The gathering included Sens. Barbara Cegavske and Michael Roberson of Las Vegas, Ben Kieckhefer of Reno, and around 20 students who are part of a three-day camp out at the Legislature to protest education cuts and to support a tax package.
Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada’s Jan Gilbert says the sit-down was the result of trolling the halls for legislators who were up for a chat.
The discussions covered familiar ground, with students urging lawmakers to invest in education, and lawmakers saying reform has to come first.
The meeting ended when legislators rose to attend hearings. Students stayed behind chanting, “wake up, Nevada.”
