First Two Arrests In Swarm Burglary
LAS VEGAS (CBS) – Metro police have made two arrests so far in a swarm burglary that gained national attention. Kathleen Cornell and Deangelo Harris, both 18-years-old, have been arrested and charged in the incident.
The burglary happened at the City Stop convenience store at Pecos and Sunset Roads in early May when a mob of young people bombarded the store. Police say more than $600 in merchandise was stolen.
The actions of the mob were caught on surveillance tape.
Police say they have identified 10 of the 26 people involved in the swarm. Police have issued arrest warrants for five of the suspects and have arrested two.
“From what we understand, they were in the area at a local teen hangout or a party and they just stopped at that convenience store and a couple of people went in, did some minor shoplifting and it just became a crime of opportunity and just a frenzy occurred,” said Metro Lt. Tom Roberts.
Police say some of the suspects are involved in gang activity, but that this was not a gang incident. Police believe the attack was random in nature, and not planned.
The suspects arrested are adults and have been charged with burglary, grand larceny and conspiracy.
There are still 16 people Metro need help identifying. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
