LAS VEGAS (AP) — One person is dead and seven people were hospitalized after a freeway crash involving a wrong-way driver, a car full of people and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 15 just outside Las Vegas.

Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Kevin Honea said Monday the crash happened a little before 10:30 p.m. Sunday when a pickup truck going southbound in the northbound lanes slammed head-on into the car carrying five people near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

A passenger in the sedan died at the scene, she has been identified by the Clark County Coroner as 29-year-old Elvira Cortez.

Honea says the tractor-trailer hit the pickup, which caught fire.

The driver of the pickup, two people in the big rig and four people in the car were hospitalized. Their names weren’t immediately made public.

Honea says alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
