(Las Vegas, NV) – Authorities say the Valley’s Latino neighborhoods have long been home to so-called “botanicas,” or natural medicine stores. But the death of Elena Caro in a fatal enhancement has raised questions about safety and marketing.
Metro Homicide Lieutenant Lew Roberts says Caro’s death was the first in his memory to involve what he called a “makeshift doctor” illegally treating patients. Licensed plastic surgeons in the Valley warn enhancement procedures can lead to serious injury or death if not properly done.
The issue of medical fraud at botanicas will be discussed this afternoon at the Mexican Consulate of Las Vegas.
