Budget Deal Nixes Yucca Mountain
The budget deal negotiated Friday night will allow the Obama administration to shut down work on the Yucca Mountain nuclear repository. A spokesman for Senator Harry Reid’s office tells the “Review-Journal” a rider in a Republican-approved budget bill would have stopped the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from closing down efforts to license the waste site northwest of Las Vegas.
The rider was not included in the final bill approved by President Obama and Congressional leaders that stopped a threatened government shutdown. Reid’s spokesman says the majority leader will block any effort to revive Yucca Mountain.
