KXNT has learned that Dave Rice will be announced as the new head basketball coach at UNLV. The university confirmed that Rice was offered the job by Athletic Director Jim Livengood on Sunday, and has accepted. The hiring is pending the approval of the Board of Regents. A formal news conference is scheduled for Monday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center, with a fan reception to welcome Rice back scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Cox Pavilion.
Rice, 42, has spent the past six seasons as an assitant at BYU, where in recent years he was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. He played as a reserve under coach Jerry Tarkanian on UNLV’s 1990 National Championship team and 1991 Final Four team before earning both his bachelor’s degree and MBA from UNLV. He spent 11 seasons as an assistant with the Runnin’ Rebels under head coaches Tim Grgurich, Bill Bayno, and Charlie Spoonhour but was not retained when Lon Kruger was hired in 2004. Rice then spent one season as an assistant at Utah State before going to BYU.
The Review-Journal reports Rice is looking to add former Runnin’ Rebel star Stacey Augmon to his staff. Augmon is currently an assistant with the Denver Nuggets.
The other finalist for the job was former Runnin’ Rebel player, actor, and college and NBA head coach Reggie Theus. Theus is currently an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Kruger resigned as UNLV coach after seven seasons back on April 1st to accept the same position at the University of Oklahoma.
