(Las Vegas, NV) — If the federal government shuts down at midnight tonight, the biggest effect will be felt at federally-managed recreation areas such as Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon, which could shut down to visitors.
Thousands of federal workers will be temporarily laid off. Military personnel will continue to work and earn money, but paychecks will be delayed until legislators work out the federal budget.
The Post Office will remain open because it’s self-funded, and Social Security checks will still be delivered. The IRS will probably shutdown, but officials expect federal courts to remain open.
